Chipotle Turkey Strata

to 8 (1/2-inch-thick) Italian bread slices

tablespoons chipotle sauce*
|
|

cups chopped cooked dark turkey meat
|
|
1-1/2
|
cups shredded Cheddar cheese,** divided
|
|

eggs
|

cups milk
|

1/2

teaspoon salt
|

1/4

teaspoon pepper

*If you can't find chipotle sauce, substitute 1 tablespoon tomato sauce mixed with 1 tablespoon adobo sauce with chipotles.

**For a spicier dish, substitute Monterey Jack cheese with jalapeño peppers.

1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Grease 9-inch square baking pan. Arrange 3 to 4 bread slices to cover bottom of pan. Cut bread to fit, if necessary. Spread chipotle sauce over bread. Spread turkey over sauce. Sprinkle 1 cup cheese over turkey. Cover with remaining 3 to 4 bread slices.

2. Beat together eggs, milk, salt and pepper. Pour over bread; press down firmly so bread absorbs liquid. Top with remaining 1/2 cup cheese. Bake, uncovered, 60 to 70 minutes or until set and golden brown. Remove from oven. Let stand 10 to 15 minutes before cutting.

Tip
This dish can be assembled up to 8 hours in advance. Cover with foil and chilled. Bake a few minutes longer, if necessary.
